Mechanical Engineer (GCC/Mining / Plant Maintenance / Chrome Operations) – North West, South Africa

Job Description:

Our client, an established mining organisation operating a large-scale open-cast chrome mining operation in North West, is seeking a highly experienced Mechanical Engineer to take accountability for all mechanical maintenance activities across the mining operation and associated processing facilities.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring optimal equipment availability, legislative compliance, and the effective leadership of mechanical maintenance teams. This role requires a technically competent and safety-driven professional with strong leadership capability and a focus on continuous improvement in a demanding mining environment.

Responsibilities:

• Oversee and manage all mechanical maintenance activities across the mining operation and processing plants.
• Ensure optimal performance, availability, and reliability of all mechanical equipment and assets.
• Develop, implement, and monitor preventative and predictive maintenance strategies.
• Manage breakdowns and minimise downtime through effective troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) legislation and standards.
• Lead, mentor, and develop mechanical maintenance teams, including artisans and foremen.
• Manage maintenance budgets, costs, and procurement of mechanical spares and contractor services.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to improve plant efficiency, reliability, and cost effectiveness.
• Liaise closely with production teams to ensure alignment between maintenance planning and operational targets.

Qualification and Skill:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Government Certificate of Competency (GCC – Mines & Works) is mandatory.
• Minimum of 10 years’ experience in a mining environment, preferably within open-cast chrome operations.
• Strong technical knowledge of plant maintenance systems, mining equipment, and applicable safety regulations.
• Proven leadership and team management experience within a mining or heavy industrial environment.
• Valid driver licence.
