Senior Backfill Engineer (Underground / Paste fill / CRF / Rockfill / SHEC) – Botswana

Job Description:

Our client is seeking a Senior Backfill Engineer who will play a crucial role in ensuring the stability and safety of underground mining operations. The role will ensure mine backfilling activities are supported with appropriate plans and scheduled which are then followed and monitored to provide for safe and efficient mine production.

Responsibilities:

• Champion and enforce a strong safety culture throughout the project to meet SHEC standards and enhance safety behaviours including incorporating safety in design
• Responsible for risk identification, safety practices, environmental, security and quality management of the Zone 5 mining project during construction and operations.
• Oversee the implementation of health and safety policies and procedures.
• Ensure safe backfilling and long hole stopes.
• Provide subject matter expertise for all operational and design aspects of paste filling.
• Optimise availability and utilisation if the backfilling system.
• Manage the construction works for a new backfill system.
• Draft scopes of work for capital projects required during backfill system upgrades.
• Design and implement appropriate backfilling system.
• Optimise backfill strength and cement consumption.
• Initiate continuous improvement initiatives leading to cost saving opportunities whilst keeping abreast of new developments within area of speciality.
• Work with Mine Planners to deliver longer term reticulation design and scheduling for backfill areas.
• Work with the Underground Manager Backfill to design and schedule the underground backfill backbone.
• Undertake QA/QC analysis alongside Geotechnical Engineers to ensure suitability for paste re-development and adjacency mining.
• Coordinate between backfill plant and mining operations to meet a backfill schedule in relation to mining production requirements.
• Train and develop Junior Planning Engineers to be able to perform the full function for Backfill planning.
• Conduct regular inspections and audits to verify compliance with specifications.
• Identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies.
• Participating in risk reviews including analysis and communication of potential risks and changes may pose to the project.
• Monitor project expenditures and ensure adherence to the approved budge.

Requirements:

• 7 years industry experience plus 5 years+ direct experience with mine backfill systems.
• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical/ mining/ civil engineering.
• Practical experience of operational mining practices.
• Good understanding of backfilling techniques Paste fill, CRF and rockfill.
• Knowledge of 3 D Mine design software and experience in PM advantageous.
