Senior Mechanical Engineer – (Mechanical Engineering / EPCM / Process Plant / Commissioning / Mining) – Johannesburg

Job Description:

Our client, a large mining project developer, is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join their Capital Projects team supporting the development of a major platinum mining operation in Zimbabwe, primary work location is based in Johannesburg. Reporting to the Project Manager, the successful candidate will provide technical leadership across all mechanical engineering activities, ensuring mechanical systems and equipment are engineered, procured, installed, commissioned and handed over safely and in accordance with project specifications. The role will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, EPCM consultants, contractors and operations personnel throughout the project lifecycle. Travel between Johannesburg and the project site in Zimbabwe as required.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the mechanical engineering discipline throughout all phases of the project lifecycle, from detailed engineering through to commissioning and handover.
• Review, approve and provide technical oversight of mechanical engineering designs, specifications, equipment selections and engineering deliverables.
• Ensure compliance with project specifications, engineering standards, statutory requirements and company procedures across all mechanical systems.
• Lead multidisciplinary design reviews, value engineering initiatives and technical risk assessments to optimise project outcomes.
• Provide technical leadership during procurement activities, including vendor evaluations, technical bid assessments, supplier inspections and Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs).
• Provide senior technical support during construction, resolving complex engineering issues and ensuring installations comply with approved documentation.
• Lead mechanical commissioning activities, oversee mechanical completion and support integrated commissioning across mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and process disciplines.
• Verify equipment performance against design intent while supporting operational readiness, plant optimisation and production ramp-up activities.
• Participate in HAZOP studies, Management of Change (MOC) reviews and engineering risk management processes.

Qualification and Skill:

• Minimum 12–15 years of mechanical engineering experience.
• Extensive experience within mining, minerals processing or heavy industrial projects.
• Significant EPCM project delivery experience.
• Proven experience on large greenfield and brownfield projects.
• Extensive construction, commissioning and operational readiness experience.
• Platinum processing plant experience will be highly advantageous.
