Occupational Hygiene Practitioner

Role Purpose

A large mining house in the Northern Cape is seeking a qualified and experienced Occupational Hygiene Practitioner to proactively anticipate, recognise, evaluate, and control workplace health stressors. The role is critical in ensuring legal compliance, safeguarding employee health, and preventing occupational disease claims through effective occupational hygiene management.

Key Performance Areas

The successful incumbent will be responsible for, but not limited to:

• Conducting occupational health risk assessments and evaluations
• Managing and maintaining Codes of Practice (COPs)
• Planning and executing occupational hygiene sampling programmes
• Performing audits, investigations, and inspections
• Overseeing laboratory management and liaison
• Ensuring accurate reporting and data integrity control
• Maintaining strict SHERQ compliance
• Promoting ethical conduct and professional standards

Minimum Qualifications

• Grade 12
• Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health / Occupational Hygiene
• Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental Control or
• Technologist Level qualification – Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH)

Experience Required

• Minimum 3 years’ operational experience as an Occupational Hygiene Practitioner within a mining or heavy industrial environment

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

Computer Literacy:

• MS Office (Basic)
• Achiever
• Isometrix

Statutory Knowledge:

• Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA)
• Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
• Hazardous Chemical Substances Act
• Basic knowledge of COIDA

Technical & Specialist Competencies:

• Occupational hygiene sampling methodologies (NIOHS)
• Use of occupational hygiene monitoring equipment including:
  • Personal sampling pumps and accessories
  • Calibrators
  • Noise dosimeters
  • Temperature stress monitors
  • Vibration monitors
  • Real-time analysers
  • Lux meters, sound level meters, and scales

Behavioural & Professional Skills:

• Strong influencing and communication skills
• Ability to engage line management and employees on occupational health matters
• High attention to detail and data accuracy
• Ethical conduct and professional judgement

Professional Registration

• Registration with the Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH)
• Mine Ventilation Society – Intermediate Certificate
