Job Summary
Design Engineer – Instrumentation, responsible for the detailed design and engineering of instrumentation and
control systems for oil & gas, infrastructure, and industrial projects. The role involves selection and specification
of field instruments, preparation of instrumentation engineering drawings and documents, development of
control and safety system interfaces, performing instrumentation calculations, and ensuring compliance with
applicable industry standards, project specifications, and QHSE requirements.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform detailed instrumentation engineering and design activities for oil & gas, infrastructure, and
industrial projects.
- Develop and review Instrument Index, I/O List, Instrument Datasheets, Instrument Specifications, and
Instrument Schedule.
- Prepare and review instrumentation design drawings including Instrumentation and Control
Diagrams, P&IDs, Instrument Loop Diagrams, Hook-up Drawings, and Wiring Diagrams.
- Prepare and review instrument cable schedules, cable block diagrams, junction box schedules,
termination diagrams, and instrument installation details.
- Develop and review Control System Architecture, I/O allocation, marshalling details, and interfaces
with DCS, PLC, ESD, SIS, F&G, and other control systems.
- Perform instrument sizing and selection including control valves, on/off valves, flow, pressure,
temperature, level, analytical, and other process instrumentation.
- Prepare and review control valve datasheets, sizing calculations, valve specifications, and related
technical documents.
- Develop and review Cause & Effect diagrams, Control Narratives, Alarm and Trip settings, and
shutdown logic in coordination with process and control system disciplines.
- Develop and review equipment datasheets, technical specifications, material requisitions, BOQs, and
MTOs.
- Prepare technical evaluations of vendor offers and ensure compliance with project specifications,
datasheets, and applicable standards.
- Coordinate with instrument vendors and suppliers for technical clarifications, document reviews, and
resolution of engineering comments.
- Review vendor drawings, calculations, datasheets, and technical documentation.
- Prepare and submit instrumentation design reports, calculations, and engineering documentation.
- Coordinate with Process, Mechanical, Electrical, Piping, Civil, Telecom, and other engineering
disciplines to resolve interfaces and design requirements.
- Interface with procurement, construction, pre-commissioning, commissioning, and operations teams to provide technical support. - Participate in FAT, SAT, inspection, testing, commissioning, and loop-check activities where required. - Ensure instrumentation designs comply with applicable IEC, ISA, NFPA, ISO, and relevant project codes and specifications.
QHSE Responsibilities
- Ensure all instrumentation and control system designs comply with relevant QHSE standards, codes,
regulations, and project requirements.
- Support Hazard Identification (HAZID) and Risk Assessments (RA) during the design phase.
- Participate in risk screening and hazard identification activities during the early design stages to
proactively address potential HSE risks.
- Participate in HAZOP, SIL assessments, LOPA, constructability reviews, and other safety-related
engineering activities as required.
- Support the development and review of Safety Instrumented System (SIS) requirements and related
safety documentation.
- Maintain thorough documentation for design traceability and quality assurance during audits.
- Participate in QHSE training programs, toolbox talks, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Job-Specific Education & Certification
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Control Engineering, Electronics & Instrumentation
Engineering, or equivalent.
Certifications
- Certification or demonstrated proficiency in relevant instrumentation and control engineering
software/tools.
- Familiarity with engineering software and design tools used for instrumentation and control system
design.

Job-Specific Competencies
- Proficient in AutoCAD, MS Office, and relevant instrumentation engineering/design software.
- Knowledge of DCS, PLC, ESD, SIS, F&G, and industrial control systems.
- Strong knowledge of field instrumentation, control valves, shutdown valves, and process measurement
systems.
- Strong understanding of P&IDs, instrument loop diagrams, hook-up drawings, cable schedules, and
instrument installation requirements.
- Familiar with project life cycle from concept and FEED through detailed engineering, procurement,
construction, commissioning, and start-up.
- Strong understanding of instrumentation safety, hazardous area requirements, control systems, and
engineering practices.
- Knowledge of applicable IEC, ISA, NFPA, ISO, and project-specific standards and specifications. - Ability to review vendor documentation and perform technical evaluation of instrumentation equipment and systems. - Strong coordination skills with multidisciplinary engineering teams, vendors, procurement, construction, and commissioning teams.
