Role summary

The Accountant will be responsible for managing the full-cycle financial operations of a trading and light manufacturing company. This includes day-to-day bookkeeping, maintaining petty cash floats, preparing statutory financial statements, and ensuring compliance with Sierra Leone tax and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will work primarily in Tally and must be comfortable transitioning to Microsoft Dynamics as the company upgrades its ERP system later in the year.

Key responsibilities

General Accounting & Bookkeeping

• Maintain accurate day-to-day records across the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and bank accounts in Tally.
• Record all trade and manufacturing transactions including purchases, sales, production costs, inventory movements, and overhead allocations.
• Perform regular bank reconciliations and ensure all entries are posted in a timely manner.
• Maintain fixed asset registers and process depreciation schedules in line with company policy.

Petty Cash Management

• Oversee and maintain multiple petty cash floats across different operational sites or departments.
• Verify and process petty cash claims, ensuring all expenditures are properly authorised and supported with receipts.
• Conduct periodic surprise counts and reconciliations of all petty cash holdings.
• Replenish petty cash funds in a timely manner and flag any anomalies or discrepancies to management.

Financial Reporting

• Prepare monthly and quarterly management accounts including Profit & Loss statements, Balance Sheets, and cash flow summaries.
• Produce year-end financial statements ready for external audit and tax filing.
• Perform variance analysis between budget and actual performance and present findings to management.
• Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and rolling forecasts.

Tax & Regulatory Compliance

• Ensure timely and accurate filing of all statutory returns including GST/VAT, PAYE, withholding tax, National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) contributions, and corporate income tax.
• Prepare and submit year-end tax accounts in compliance with NRA requirements and applicable Sierra Leone tax legislation.
• Liaise with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory bodies as required.
• Keep up to date with changes in local financial regulations and advise management on compliance obligations.

ERP Systems & Process Improvement

• Work proficiently in Tally for all current accounting operations.
• Support the company's planned migration to Microsoft Dynamics by participating in data preparation, testing, and training activities.
• Contribute to improvements in internal controls, financial processes, and reporting systems.

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Professional certification (ACCA, ICSA, or local equivalent) preferred but not mandatory.
• Minimum 3 years of hands-on accounting experience, ideally within a trading, manufacturing, or commercial business.
• Proficiency in Tally accounting software is essential.
• Demonstrable experience with at least one ERP system (SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, Sage, QuickBooks, or similar) is an advantage.
• Sound understanding of Sierra Leone tax regulations, NRA filings, and NASSIT obligations.
• Candidates with greater experience, particularly those with a background working in African business environments, are strongly encouraged to apply — an increased salary package may be considered commensurate with experience.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret financial data and present it clearly.
• Proven ability to manage multiple petty cash floats and enforce cash handling controls.
• Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision in a lean team environment.
• High integrity, discretion, and commitment to sound internal controls.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with non-finance colleagues across operations and procurement.
• Ability to manage competing priorities and meet strict reporting and filing deadlines.
• Adaptable and willing to learn new systems, particularly ahead of the ERP transition.
